Wilhelm Smith

Wilhelm is a sophomore in the Bioengineering at UMD Clark School. Over the summer of 2023, he participated in the Undergraduate Research Program, in which he is working in a lab that is working on a methodology for detecting high concentrations of histone in a patient who is suffering post-traumatic injury and experiencing multiple organ failure in a matter of 30 minutes. Currently, he was accepted as the first cohort of the Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program. This program allows him develop research skills among a group of diverse undergraduates in hopes of completing their baccalaureate degree, and transitioning into and completing biomedical, research-focused higher degree programs such as Master's and or Ph.D. This program also allows him to be involved in the lab throughout his undergraduate career and gives him the opportunity to gain first-hand research. Lastly, he is working as a Program Assistant and mentor in the CMSE Bridge Program, in which he assists the program coordinator in administrative work, and aid the students in their academic classes to prepare them for freshman year.
